Types of Bongs Explained

If you’re new to smoking glass pipes, it may seem like the number of different types of bongs is overwhelming. Bongs come in different styles and shapes, and they’re made from different materials, so where do you start? How do you know which one you’d like when there are so many to choose from?

We want you to be knowledgeable of the types of bongs before you go out and purchase a new piece. Here is our beginner’s bong guide, so you know exactly what to look for on your next shopping trip:

The Materials

Glass Bongs

Among the more popular types of bongs are glass pipes. When smoking out of glass, there are no unwanted flavors or additional tastes. Bongs made from glass feature some of the most iconic and artistic designs in the industry. It’s also a lot easier to clean glass. Glass pipes tend to be more expensive due to these factors. For your first bong purchase, we highly recommend a glass bong so you experience high-quality smoke right off the bat.

Ceramic Bongs

Ceramic bongs can also be very artistic pieces because clay is very malleable. You can create pipes of different shapes, styles, and colors a lot more easily than with other materials. However, when smoking from a ceramic bong, you may taste some additional flavors left over from the clay. This type of bong will also be less portable than others because of its fragility and heavier weight. Ceramic bongs may equal or exceed the price of glass bongs because they require the talent of an artist; it’s less likely to find mass amounts of these bongs being produced in factories.

Metal Bongs

Metal bongs are a bit less common than the other types on this list. They’re usually known for their shiny, sleek appearance. They last a long time and are relatively inexpensive, but there is a chance that you’ll taste a metallic flavor. You’ll also have a difficult time knowing when to clean them because they’re not transparent, so you won’t be able to see residue building up inside.

Plastic Bongs

Plastic water pipes are very common because they are aesthetically similar to glass and plastic is very malleable. It’s the most portable material on our list because plastic is light and incredibly durable. It is also a very inexpensive material. However, depending on the bong, you may get additional, chemical flavors.

Bamboo Bongs

Some of the first water pipes were made from bamboo in Thailand. In fact, the original Thai word for these bamboo bongs, buang, is just a slightly different than the modern day word. These bongs usually appear a lot more simplistic, consisting of a straight tube and a stem. Any decoration is lightly carved, painted, or dyed. This is another material that’s durable. Any additional flavors come from the bamboo or the dye used to stain it.

The Styles

Straight Tube Bongs

This is one of the more traditional, simplistic styles of bongs which is easy to use. It consists of a base, a straight pipe-like tube, and a stem sticking coming from near the base. You pour water in the tube, light your material in the bowl and inhale.

Beaker Bongs

This type of bong is similar to a straight tube bong but has a cylindrical body that acts as a base and appears similar to a scientific beaker. Its shape helps adds extra filtration and insulation to keep the smoke’s taste and temperature satisfactory. You use it the same way you use the straight-tube bong; pour in water, light the material and inhale.

Round-Based Bongs

A round-based bong is a little different than a beaker in its shape. The bottom portion is spherical rather than cylindrical so it may be less steady than the beaker, but more steady than the straight tube. Its function is the same as a beaker, and you smoke it the same way you would smoke the straight tube.

Percolator Bongs

This is a bong with the addition of a percolator. A percolator diffuses the water to make the inhalation of smoke feel smoother. Bongs with percolators tend to be a little more expensive. However, it’s worth it for the extra filtration. Also, Percolators have smaller crevices and can be harder to clean.

Multi-Chamber Bongs

Multi-chamber bongs are similar to straight tube bongs but contain extra chambers for filtration. They are also called recycler bongs because the chambers filter the smoke multiple times as the water travels through them. This makes the smoke feel smoother when inhaled. They are more complex and tend to be more expensive and a little bit harder to clean.
